Director Product Development Engineering -
(Fasteners/Fittings)Aerospace
The Director Product Development Engineering will lead and mentor a
multidisciplinary Engineering team by developing and delivering
aerospace and defense products, such as various fasteners and
fittings. The Director will contribute to customer and internal
R&D proposals, ensure execution of awarded development
contracts from design through qualification testing/certification,
and transfer new designs from engineering to production. The
Director of Engineering will also provide leadership to product
development programs to ensure schedule, cost, and quality of
deliverables meet or exceed leadership and customer
expectations.
Job Core Responsibilities
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Provide technical oversight to the product development team to
minimize schedule, cost, and technical risk.
Increase efficiencies and improve processes on product development
programs.
Improve the quality of the first build, and derivative programs
work.
Monitor and establish metrics for tracking project progress through
completion.
Support the root cause analysis process by providing resources and
the associated detailed engineering analysis to result in permanent
solutions and corrective actions.
Implement standardized processes within the department to support
product development utilizing aerospace and industry certification
standards
Own the engineering budget process: Develop a bottom-up budget
based on the project portfolio
PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
Facilitate a culture supporting accountability to clearly
identified performance metrics
Facilitate a culture where engineering is part of high-performance
cross-functional teams
Manage staff recruitment, performance, and career development
opportunities.
Promote learning: give feedback, coach and mentor direct
reports
Communicate clearly and decisively to ensure that each employee
understands their roles/function and how to achieve objectives.
Establish projected workload and capacity planning for engineers in
the department.
MANUFACTURING SUPPORT
Work with Operations and the industrialization Manager to provide a
handoff from Engineering to Manufacturing, ensuring that recurring
cost and yield targets are met.
Support issues in manufacturing to ensure that the Operations
on-time delivery and quality metrics are achieved
STRATEGY
Participate and lead go/no-go decisions on potential
programs/projects.
Work with Strategy, Sales & Marketing to establish product
technology roadmaps, project development plans, budgets, and
schedules.
Job Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field
required; MBA preferred
Experience: 10 years of experience in aerospace and defense
manufacturing companies leading Product development and design
specifications in the fasteners/fitting space. (Hydraulic systems
are highly preferred. Prior engineering development management
experience is required (at least five years).
Skills
Ability to research and analyze data effectively, compile
information, and prepare reports
Well-organized, detail-oriented with a focus on cost and scope
management
Understands all aspects of the product lifecycle.
Ability to visualize and develop plans and goals to grow the
business
Capability to effectively communicate strategic product/technology
roadmaps to the team.
Ability to obtain productivity improvement and to help group
members achieve higher success levels
Desire to mentor and develop
Supervisory skills, including delegation, training, and evaluating
performance
Team building Skills and proven ability to motivate and manage a
team
Demonstrated ability to provide cross-functional leadership
